Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce Faceted, an exhibition of new paintings by Ky Anderson. This will be her fourth solo exhibition with the gallery and an artist reception will be held November 12th from 6-8pm.

Ky Anderson’s abstract paintings evolve through an improvisational, instinctive process. Working on several pieces at once, Anderson moves from one composition to the next, allowing colors and shapes to flow between them. This approach creates distinct series, and in her newest body of work, her shapes have become sharper and more pointed. Curves meet triangles and cutouts, linear forms and patterns stack and fan out, and bold, solid shapes contrast with delicate transparencies. Her palette moves between deep, earthy tones and warm, sunny hues. Of this newest series, she writes, “shapes have become sharp and triangular, like paper airplanes and unfolded origami. Color stands in for folds and reflections, doing the work of light, as if each flat plane were catching it at a different angle.”

Anderson has also included three ceramic sculptures, a new medium in her practice. For these works she mixes her own clay and “treats glazes like paint: mixing, watering down, layering, and embracing the accidents.” The wall sculptures are earthy and more muted than her paintings, though their forms echo those in her painted compositions. Lines, stripes, cutouts and sharp points appear throughout.

Ky Anderson received her BFA in Fiber and Sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her work has been shown widely across the United States, Canada, and Europe in solo and group exhibitions as well as art fairs.
