This art is of small lines using warm colors that are interlining with each other. It is up to interpretation on what this art is supposed to resemble, but its thick strokes allows itself to compliment the cool colored background.

NEW YORK, NY –– March 28th, 2019 –– Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present its latest exhibition of recent paintings by Nancy Cohen.

In this most recent body of work, Nancy Cohen continues her exploration of waterways and their human like existence - persevering under constant adversity from outside forces. The imagery derives from memories of particular landscapes Cohen has encountered. Of them, the Samana Bay in the Dominican Republic and the tides of Eastport, Maine, have left a lasting impression on Cohen and are the driving force behind this series. Samana Bay, and a good portion of the Dominican Republic’s natural landscape, has seen the devastating effects of pollution and industry, devastation Cohen witnessed first hand.

Following her trip to the Dominican Republic she was captivated by the enormous waves of Eastport that with every 12 hour cycle left the coast littered with the both great varieties of marine life and the remnants of Maine’s industrial past.

This new series is an attempt to give form to the images and experiences Cohen has been archiving; images of the vulnerability and resilience of both nature and the man-made world, in addition to personal reflections on human aging. Combining both sculptural and mark-making techniques the work speaks to the physicality of the body and simultaneously evokes an intimate sense of touch. In a way, it is akin to being in nature and experiencing both vastness and quiet moments of focus.

Nancy Cohen has exhibited throughout the United States, including at The Garrison Art Center, The Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Jersey City Museum. Her work is in the collections of Citibank, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Montclair Art Museum, and the Yale University Museum. This work has been supported in part by the STUDIOWORKS/Tides Institute & Museum of Art, and by Ninth Wave Global, private not-for profit organizations.
