Art Up Close: Porcelain Sculptures by Monica Banks

Exploring the unspoken
June 6, 2022

This is a wonderful new installation of ceramic pieces by Monica Banks, an artist from East Hampton. Monica works with porcelain and makes everyday objects like plates, teapots, knives, and forks. However, Monica's work is totally unusable, and all have an undercurrent of ominous uncertainty.

For example, this vase is pokey and features eyes and teeth, but it's beautiful. Here we have a lovely cake on a cake stand, topped with teeth. This piece is interesting because it shows how Monica is dealing with scale, and she's made the teapot the same size as the house. One of the questions you must ask is which is more important – the house or the teapot?
