Eccentric Color: Modern Abstract Paintings and Wall Sculptures

Expressing robust, distinct visual language
March 2, 2021

Welcome to Eccentric Color,  featuring Celia Johnson, Conny Goelz Schmitt, and Fran Shalom.

I brought these three artists together because although they’re very different in terms of agenda, they’re similar in the basic idea that they use a structure and then deconstruct and reconstruct it. The structure is the basis, and then they play with it, all in different ways.

Conny uses antique book covers to create her collages and wall sculptures. Celia uses paint in different layers and combines it with the raw panel so that it’s paint versus panel, and this gives the paint a sense of it being an actual “thing.” And then Fran uses an idiosyncratic structure that is poppy and almost funny.
