Art Up Close: Wall Sculptures by Conny Goelz Schmitt

Playing with deconstruction and reconstruction
February 22, 2021

Conny Goelz Schmitt makes wall sculptures and geometric collages out of vintage book covers, of which she has collected thousands. She uses them to create these wonderfully odd wall sculptures that combine the flat with a surprising three-dimensionality. The covers have a patina which shows how the books are used and torn, but they're all untouched except for being cut up by Conny.

Her palette is just wonderful, the way she combines different textures with different colors—which are all given colors and part of the history of these books.

“My work is a never-ending story where I play with deconstruction and reconstruction, and changing dimensionality - often within one piece.”
