These wonderful paintings by Sydney Licht are full of surprises. The surfaces, color, and use of the object are all surprising. Sydney takes the objects of everyday life and, with the capacity for observation, makes small still life paintings that are monumental.
Licht says that remnants of our consumer culture keep finding their way into her work.
“Our visual lives are cluttered with packages, clothing, and furnishings that come at us in a swirl of color and pattern. By picturing things that reflect the way we currently live and that we often overlook, I hope to update the conventions of still life."
