Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to announce Compositions, an exhibition of still life paintings by Frances Campani. This is her first exhibition with the gallery. A reception for the artist will be held on September 24th from 6-8pm.
Frances Campani ‘s minimal paintings reduce the essential elements of still life - bottles, flowers, and fabric draped over a surface - into geometric components. These forms live in a light-filled space created through the careful application of many thin layers of pigment. Muted palettes of cream and taupe play with the transparencies of window and bottle to turn shadows and reflections into abstract elements that create a calming rhythm. In these simple, restrained interiors every element is necessary, and each contributes to the sense of order and balance that permeates Campani’s work.
Campani is an architect as well as a painter and this life-long discipline informs the structured geometry of her compositions in paint. She bases her still lives on careful observation, and as she says her paintings “seek to reveal the essential”
Frances Campani received her B.A. in Art History from SUNY Stony Brook and her Master of Architecture from Columbia University. She studied painting at the Art Students’ League in NYC and at the Scuola Statale d’Arte in Siena, Italy. She was an Associate Professor of Architecture at NYIT until 2026, and is a partner in Campani and Schwarting in Port Jefferson, NY. This collaboration has won numerous awards for affordable housing solutions and mixed-use projects and currently works with a number of civic and non-profit groups to improve public spaces in their communities. She has also exhibited her paintings in galleries and public spaces throughout Long Island and New York City.
