This body of work features a recurring cast of fantastical characters inspired in part by many of my favorite artists and illustrators such as Maurice Sendak and Remedios Varo. The Waiting Land is a short picture book that shows these characters stranded on a mysterious island. They wait for the arrival of a passenger ship that they hope will save them. It is inspired in part by my grandmother who in 1941 escaped the Nazis by boarding the SS Nyassa from Lisbon to Havana, Cuba along with 400 other refugees.
This show also features painted concept art from With/In, a projection-based artwork/animation created for Night Lights Denver. It tells a story set in a dreamscape where childhood games and toys become mystical rituals for personal enlightenment. The work explores the transformations that are most dramatic in our youth but recur in all seasons of life: finding your voice amid alienation, finding your creativity in solitude, and finally finding yourself by uplifting the community around you.
The work was projected onto the Daniel's & Fisher Tower in downtown Denver from April 1–30 2026.
