Art Up Close: Floral Still Life Paintings by Stanley Bielen

Defining the image with brushstrokes
January 31, 2024

Stanley Bielen is a wonderful still-life painter from Philadelphia who paints what he sees. He paints flowers that he grows in the springtime and most of the year. These paintings are very typical of his work.

Stanley puts his floral images against a white, minimal background so that the flowers are very exposed. It’s very painterly; you can see how his brushstrokes define the image, but don’t make it too realistic. He kind of uses the flower as a jumping point to paint.
