"Taking the Backward Step" is Fran Shalom's fourth solo show with the gallery. Defined by her pared-down shapes, hard-edge lines, and vivid colors, Shalom weaves the formal aesthetics of abstraction with playful improvisation.

"Taking the Backward Step" is a phrase by the Japanese Zen master Eihei Dogen and refers to the practice of turning inward to observe the nature of the mind. It encourages one to let go of their usual ways of perceiving and to, instead, experience the present moment without judgment or attachment.

Shalom translates her inquisitiveness and impartiality while painting with the Zen teachings in mind. "Sometimes I can get out of my way, and sometimes I fail. When I can, I improvise, stay curious and playful, and try not to prematurely judge the work. It's a fine balance and a continual challenge," says Shalom. "Intentionality in the moment is where I try to be."
