  • "I NEED TO SPEND SIGNIFICANT TIME IN A CERTAIN PLACE TO GET A SENSE OF WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT." - LISA BRESLOW

This online survey is the first comprehensive presentation of Lisa Breslow's oil paintings from the last five years. It highlights Breslow's contemplative, atmospheric paintings of New York street and park scenes. Breslow is a longtime resident of New York, and the city has been her most steadfast subject. In addition to her abstracted landscapes, the exhibition showcases her floral still lifes. Regardless of the subject, her focus is on the essential qualities of place and nature rather than the hyper-specificity of the details.

Lisa Breslow has exhibited extensively in the United States, including at The National Academy Museum and the Heritage Museum. She has been awarded two Pollock-Krasner Foundation awards, as well as an award from the National Academy Museum in New York, and was a two-time Invited Artist at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking. Her work is in private, corporate, and institutional collections worldwide, including the Heckscher Museum, Academy Art Museum and the Long Island Museum. She lives and works in New York City.

    Lisa Breslow

    Floating 2, 2023

"Several years ago, I was asked to participate in a gallery exhibit of NYC-themed paintings. Until then, the subject of my work was solely the natural landscape.  In exploring my urban surroundings, I was excited to discover the hidden beauty in the city. I tend to gravitate towards places of stillness, or serenity, which inspire me in much the same way as places in nature. In these works I introduce geometry and architecture, and juxtapose these elements with the nature present in the urban landscape." - Lisa Breslow

    Snowlight, 2019
“Snowlight is a view from my balcony, where I am able to watch the street life below and the seasons transition.  I love the subtle color and tonal relationships when it snows- the beautiful greys and whites integrate the contrast between architecture and nature.  I am drawn to places that are part of my everyday life and continue to explore them in different lighting and times of day.”

    Central Park

    Floating 2, 2023
“Living in New York City, I seek out nature in Central Park to find serenity. Each season in the park is unique, but cherry blossom time, in particular, enchants me.  I find a flowering branch against the backdrop of the lake, and the water's reflections, magical and uplifting.  I try to capture that in my painting.”

    Purple Flowers, 2019

“The flower paintings are more intimate in scale and personal. The beauty of a simple vase of flowers on my windowsill always inspires me, and I focus on the lighting as a way to capture a moment in time. By paying close attention to the interplay of light and shadow, I am able to imbue the floral paintings with a sense of depth and nuance that speaks to the intricate beauty of the natural world.”
