Zuriel Water’s bold abstractions begin with drawing. Shapes are cut, assembled, and sewn then stained with custom pigment dispersions to embed saturated color into the fabric surface. Straight lines emerge only where the material folds. Folding becomes both structural solution and conceptual language.
The resulting works sit flat against the wall, held by small dress pins. They create an animated presence as one shape flows into the next with a lively rhythm. The vertical pieces, cheerful and chubby, suggest aliens bouncing in space. The horizontal pieces, which are larger, introduce a sense of colorful mountainous bulk. Waters Says,” “I see them as clouds—gestalt landscapes contained within their own borders, demi-gods of the troposphere.” They are at once living being and landscape.
Zuriel Waters was born in 1984 in Philadelphia, PA, and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received an MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2010 and has shown work in group exhibitions throughout New York City at galleries such as Underdonk, CANADA, Tappeto Volante and others. He has recently had solo shows at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts and My Pet Ram, and Deana Evans Projects.
