Art Up Close: New Abstract Paintings by Susan English

Unexpected and fabulous colors
July 18, 2021

Susan English created these new paintings during the pandemic. She typically works with a liquid polymer in which she mixes handmade pigments and then pours them. After years and years of pouring polymers, she really knows what she’s doing, and her pours are very controlled.  And she’s just a fabulous colorist.

Susan typically works on panels but couldn’t get any during the pandemic. So, she developed a way of working on Yupo paper, which is a thick plastic paper. Susan folds the paper to make a kind of a tray and then pours the polymer on the Yupo. It’s just beautiful, and the lines she gets are by making sharp folds in the Yupo, which contain different areas of the pigmented polymer.
